Metering in Camcorders is an important to consider when deciding on which model to get. Metering allows you to get the right exposure for your images, giving you clear and crisp moving or still images each time you use your camcorder.
Deciding on what type of metering you want included in your camcorder largely depends on how extensively you are going to use your camcorder.
There are metering features that are more apt for professionals who use their camcorders both for work and for personal purposes.
Types of Metering
There are three basic types of metering in camcorders. These are center-exposed metering, multi-dimensional metering and spot metering.
Each of these metering modes has their own uses and depending on your needs, you can set your camcorder to any one of these at different times.
Center-Weighted or Center-Exposed Metering
This is the most common type of metering found in cameras and camcorders. What this metering mode does is to focus on the central image within the background of whatever it is you’re shooting at the moment.
The camcorder automatically focuses on the central image, assuming that it is the one that you want to give the right light exposure to.
Multi-Dimensional Metering
This can be considered the most ideal type of metering in your camcorder. What this does is to take each part of the scene apart and gives each one the right kind of exposure.
Multi-dimensional metering is particularly important for scenes where there is a high level of contrasting light. This provides you with clear and crisp images for each particular scene.
Spot Metering
This is usually in automatic mode in most cameras and camcorders, which means that unless you change the settings of your metering, this is the exposure that your camcorder will focus on.
What this does is to focus on a tiny object within a particular scene or background. It gives exposure to only one area of the scene, usually the central image, leaving the rest of the background in poor lighting exposure.
Unlike in center-weighted metering where the central image is focused on without compromising the rest of the background, spot metering simply focuses on one image.
This is actually the least important type of metering mode in cameras and camcorders. You will have very little use of it so it is not that important of a consideration when choosing metering types for your camcorder.
Once you have decided which type of metering mode you want and you will be using most of the time, you can now focus on which camcorders give you the one that you want.
