Camcorders are very useful gadgets for putting both special and mundane events on video.

This electronic device is some sort of a combination of a video recorder and a video camera.

Though, of course, there are no rules on how to call this device so some people call them video cameras or by some other similar term.

Today, in our technological enhanced world, there is more than one device that has video recording capabilities. Nowadays, compact digital cameras and cell phones, among other devices, have the capability to record videos as well. In order to differentiate a camcorder from other video recorders, we can say that this device has video recording as its primary feature. Of course a cell phone and a compact digital camera will have video recording as a secondary or added feature.

Origins

The earliest camcorders take their roots in the 1990s when analog video recorders were introduced. However, video cameras have been around for quite a while and are used for television broadcasting. These early video recording devices used video tapes to store video or data.

As the years and technology grew, digital recording came into the scene as a step up from the previous video recording methods. However, video tapes still remained as the main recording media of digital recording devices.

As technology improved, taking several steps forward, other forms of recordable media were introduced. Disk drives and optical disks were also put into use since they have the capacity to store larger amounts of data. However, these storage mediums had their limits. Flash memory proved to be a compact method of storing data minus the bulk from other forms of storage.

Primary Components

Taking a dip into the technical aspects of this device, it has three primary components. These are the recorder, the lens, and the imager. Each of these major components serve a specific purpose and they make video recording possible. The lens, just like your camera’s lens, gathers the light into the imager. The imager then converts the light into electrical signals. Finally the recorder converts the electrical signals from the imager into a video format that can be stored in a storage device.

Analog or Digital?

Most of the camcorders you find sold on stores nowadays are tapeless video recorders. Video recording devices can be classified according to their storage media or storage device. Tape based recorders record video in various analog formats while the newer types of recorders store their data in various digital formats.

Some examples of analog format include Betamax, VHS, VHS-C, and Video8. These video formats are older and usually consume larger amounts of storage space. The forms of storage used by these devices are also bulky. Some examples of digital video formats include MiniDV, DVD, and solid-state flash. The name basically takes into account the method in which video is processed and recorded. Digital storage devices are considerably less bulky.

Criteria for Purchasing

Given all the information on the different camcorders you’ll find in stores, you then have to consider their various characteristics and features versus the cost for getting them. Portability is also another issue, not that many people are that crazy about carrying bulky pieces of equipment. You should also consider the amount of storage space that can be used on the video camera model you want to purchase.

You need to have ample storage space for the project of video you want to record. Consumers should also consider the video format and video quality produced by the said devices. Another issue is how user friendly is the user interface and controls. Consumers should weigh the cost versus the different features you get from these devices. If the cost is reasonable and you get the features you need then it is a fair deal indeed.
